Naga Council Dimapur clarifies on controversy
Dimapur, February 17 (MExN): The Naga Council, Dimapur, has sought to clarify that election to the Council was conducted “as per the resolution approved by the house at one of the general Council meetings”. The Naga Council was responding to a news item ‘Naga Council election turns selection’, published in a local daily on February 17.
“Election committee was duly empowered to undertake the electoral process by the executive committee vide resolution dated 04/02/10 and subsequently approved by the house at the general Council meeting on 05/02/10,” declared members of the Election Committee of Naga Council, Dimapur, in a rejoinder.
The resolution taken by the Naga Council states that in order “to adhere to norms and traditional practices in the Naga Council for smooth transition of office, the Election Committee by taking the name of tribal representatives submitted by the respective Tribal Hohos, formed a new team after studying the pros and cons for equal tribal representation to the Council office.”
The rejoinder added that after thorough deliberation and debate by the house, the election committee had put forth the report into voting, where 2/3 majority of the 41 councillors voted and accepted the proposal of the election committee. The Council, therefore, made an appeal to the public not to be misled by “individual comments” but to extend their support towards the Naga Council for the welfare of Naga society.
