The 10th National Voters' Day 2020 was commemorated in the State Capital on January 25 with Chief Secretary Temjen Toy, IAS as the chief guest. Attended by young voters, the theme for the commemoration was “Electoral literacy for stronger democracy.”

Apprising the young voters on the ground realities of the election process in Nagaland, the Chief Secretary stated, “We are probably the most electorally illiterate State in the country going by the way, we go our way in electing our leaders.”

Considering Nagaland as the smallest democracy in India, Toy questioned the unfair tactics played during elections by Nagas. “The ECI have been going all out over the years in spreading awareness in conducting not just a smooth election but a fair election. But how fair are our elections? There has been instances where the number of voters has been even more that its population. There has been instances where the number of votes polled are more than the actual voters list,” Toy pointed out.

The Chief Secretary stated that it is the bounden duty of conscientious voters as citizens of the State to continue to advocate the message of a free and fair election. “During the election the entire face of Nagaland changes. At a personal level, we all need to make efforts. I appeal to everyone to be a part of that change. No amount of campaign awareness is going to help unless we as individuals decide to change. Unless we change, democracy is not going to be strong or effective in Nagaland

We have not moral authority to blame those whom we have elected when we ourselves have behaved the way we have during elections,” urged Toy to the young voters to be missionaries of electoral literacy and empower our villages, its youth, and its women and men.

While it is not an easy task to conduct elections in the largest democracy in the world, Toy acknowledged the efforts of the Election Commission of India and its officers in making sure that election are conducted in a free and fair manner. Over the last ten years the Commission has moved one step forward where they have started looking at in educating the voters in conducting various awareness programs on the responsibility of citizens on the entire electoral process, added Toy.
