The government’s slow response to power lines electrocuting elephants could lead to a human-animal conflict, a concern that the volunteers have repeatedly raised. Wokha, April 7 (MExN): The volunteers of Green-SONS and the youth of Sanis Town in Wokha district have rescued an elephant calf on Sunday. It had strayed from its herd in Sanis locality, informed a press release from Jess Murry, Chairperson of the Green-SONS.
It was also reported that the power grid line from Doyang NEEPCO to Dimapur sparked at the same spot where two elephants were electrocuted couple of months back.
The press note speculated that the herd may have left the calf behind owing to electric sparks from the low hanging electrical lines. The volunteers also suspected that some adult elephants might have been electrocuted though it is not certain what the exact location is. A spot inspection is yet to be undertaken owing to the risk that the tension has given rise to.
The Green-SONS team also informed that the Department concerned has been informed and necessary steps are being initiated from their end. It also urged the NEEPCO, Doyang, to initiate an urgent rectification of the power grid lines and to “arrange proper precautionary measures to avoid human and animals eventualities before any serious uprising unrest arises against the Company concern.”
