Elephant destroys huts, crops in Old Aree village

Wokha | December 12

Old Aree village in Wokha district has reported an increase in elephant attacks this month, with significant damage to property and crops.

According to village chairman Liponthung Lotha, at least five huts have been destroyed, along with extensive damage to sugarcane and tapioca farms, in December alone.

Lotha informed that elephants are currently stationed in two separate groups in the vicinity. One group is in the Longkhum area, while the other is positioned close to the village, making movement unsafe for the villagers.

“The animals come extremely close to the settlement at night. Their presence is clearly audible, leaving the community worried for their life and safety,” Lotha said.

The chairman stated that he has already approached the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha and the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), urgently seeking immediate assistance to address the escalating human-elephant conflict.
