Phek, December 5 (MExN): World Soil Day on the theme ‘Be the Solution to Soil Pollution’ was celebrated on December 5 at Village Council Hall, Chizami, Phek. The welcome address was delivered by Dr Rinku Bharali, ACTO (Horticulture), KVK Phek. An oral presentation on soil health management was delivered by Dr. T. Esther Longkumer, ACTO (Soil Science), KVK-Phek. Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer, Pfutsero, Dr Imtionen emphasised on scientific and systematic approach to soil health. He also urged the farmers to practice organic farming to ensure wellbeing of human and mother earth. Branch Manager, SBI Chizami Himanka Bormudoi encouraged the farmers for financial inclusion in agriculture and allied activities. He stressed on plantation crops for high income generation as well as soil erosion prevention. Welhite Naro, Village Council Chairman and progressive farmer informed the farmers of the traditional soil management practices. Soil Health Cards were distributed to the farmers of five villages viz. Chizami, Enhulumi, Sumi, Thetsumi and Mesulumi. Guest of Honour Renbomo Ezung, SDO (Civil) Chizami appreciated the department for conducting the soil survey and distributing the soil health card for the benefit of the farming community. He urged the villagers to work hand in hand with KVK Phek and ascertain the quality of their soil and it’s up gradation. A farmer-scientist interaction programme was also conducted on the occasion. Exhibition of farmer’s oriented technologies was displayed during the event. Leaflets and folders were also distributed to the visitors. The programme concluded with words of appreciation by Dr Debojyoti Borkotoky, SMS-Animal Science, KVK Phek. Altogether 122 farmers and concern government officials participated in the event.
