English honours students of Sao Chang College undertake community extension programme

TUENSANG, MAY 14 (MExN): The Department of English, Sao Chang College, Tuensang, conducted a community extension programme by paying a visit to Government Middle School, Wongtsuwong, Old Medical Sector ‘A’, Tuensang, on May 10. 

During the brief informal session, Akyuba Sangtam, Head of English Department, Sao Chang College, expressed that educational institutions thrive due to the support of the local community and therefore they in turn should give back to the community in whatever capacity it can. Citing the present conditions, he exhorted the teachers present during the session that government run schools cannot afford to be luxurious and therefore make the best use of the available resources at hand. 

School Management Committee Chairman, Toshi Yim, expressed gratitude to the visiting faculties and the accompanying 6th semester English Honours students, while expressing deep appreciation for the concern shown towards the school. 

Head Teacher Sotsula thanked the visiting team on behalf of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school. Notebooks along with pencil boxes were distributed to 30 lower section students followed by a brief interaction with the children. The visit was part of extension service activities of the English Department whereby periodic extension services are rendered to the local community. 

Meanwhile, the Department of English, Sao Chang College also observed Rabindranth Tagore’s birth anniversary on May 9 at the college conference hall which was attended by English Honours students along with the faculty of the college. 

Head of English Department, Akyuba Sangtam gave a brief talk to the participants on the achievements of the poet laureate of India while pointing out Tagore’s immense contribution to the Indian culture, national unity and communal harmony. As the voice of India’s national awakening and spiritual heritage his poetry influenced many generations across whose writings also helped spread Indian Culture and philosophy all over the world. 

The programme was chaired by Dr Soyimla Akum, Assistant Professor (English). Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, Associate Professor, Department of English.
