‘Orange’ alert for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, ‘Yellow’ for others

The North-East States, including Nagaland, currently in the midst of an extended wet spell, will continue to see enhanced rainfall activity over the next 4 days, forecasted the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Regional Met Centre Guwahati on May 14. 

The Regional Met Centre further issued “Orange” alert for next two days (May 15 and 16) in Assam and Meghalaya, as well as in Arunachal Pradesh on May 15.

 In Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, it issued a “Yellow” watch. 

In IMD’s classification, ‘Orange’ classification is a “Be Prepared” alert, while Yellow watch is “Be Updated” alert.

According to the Met Centre, in last 24 hours up to 8.30 am on May 14, rainfall of above 7 centimetre were recorded in several places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Tripura.

In Meghalaya, where heavy rain on Friday reportedly claimed two lives, caused landslides in different areas and most rivers flowed above the danger mark, rainfall was above as high as 31 cm in Shora, 29 cm in Jowai, 25 in Mawkyrwat, and 20 in Mawphlang.

In its Saturday update, the Met Office noted that “moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is likely to continue over to Northeast India due to strong lower level Southerly/ Southwesterly winds during May 14-18.”

It further observed an eastwest trough running from “Bihar to Central Assam & Meghalaya across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim at 0.9 km above mean sea level.”

Under the influence of above systems, widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places are very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and thunderstorm/lightning and heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Meghalaya during May 14- 18, it added.
