ENPO temporarily suspends public emergency; says no to ULB nominations

Tuensang, July 7 (MExN): The Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation (ENPO) has temporarily suspended the ongoing public emergency in Eastern Nagaland, declared on February 5, 2024.

A notification from the ENPO stated that the decision to suspend was taken during the ENPO’s Central Executive Council (CEC) held on July 3, 2024, at its headquarters in Tuensang.

It was suspended as a “significant measure aimed at fostering mutual understanding and pursuing a peaceful resolution” regarding the creation of Frontier Nagaland Territory (FNT) by the Government of India, it added.

However, the ENPO stated that the suspension is subject to review in the event of compelling circumstances.

Meanwhile, regarding the issue of nominees in the urban local bodies (ULBs), the ENPO clarified that it is discussing the matter because an election took place.

However, it stated that Eastern Nagaland did not participate in that election. Accordingly, the ENPO asserted that the question of appointing nominees to the ULBs in Eastern Nagaland areas does not arise.

“Simply put, no election means no nominees,” it added, further stating that the Chenmoho resolution and the ULB nomination process are closely intertwined.

It must be noted here that civic polls were not held on June 26 in six districts of Eastern Nagaland following a general abstention call by the ENPO based on the Chenmoho resolution. The resolution adopted at Chenmoho village on February 23, 2024, among others, resolved to abstain from participation in both Central and state elections until the issue of Frontier Nagaland Territory becomes a tangible reality.
