Ensure safe working environment for journalists: Editors to Nagaland Govt

DIMAPUR, JUNE 24 (MExN): Editors of Nagaland-based newspapers today asked the Government of Nagaland to take all necessary steps towards providing safe working environment for journalists.

This comes in the backdrop of the June 23 incident, wherein unidentified person(s) fired a shot near the gate of the Nagaland Post office in Dimapur at around 9:02pm.

A joint statement from Editors of Eastern Mirror, Capi, Tir Yimyim and The Morung Express asserted that any attempt to coerce, threaten or obstruct the voices of the Freedom of the Press will only undermine the democratic foundations and practices of the society.

“While we are confident that the police will earnestly investigate and pursue all possible means to unearth the roots of the incident, we emphasize the need for the Government of Nagaland to take appropriate measures to ensure public security and create a safe environment for all,” it stated. The values and principles of the Freedom of the Press are invariably interrelated with the safety and well-being of the public, it added.
