‘Equal Pay for Equal Work’

•-While it was inspiring to read in the dailies of the ordination of I. Alemla by ABAM, it was disheartening to read of the gender bias in wages of labourers fixed by the Market Rate Control Cell, DMC.  It is encouraging that DMC is taking initiative to look into the wages of labourers, but at the same time to fix wages on the basis of gender is not just at all, to say the least. The principle of "Equal Pay for Equal Work" must be implemented even for daily wage earners. Since women also do the same work for equal hours under the same environmental conditions, to fix women's daily wage by less than Rs 20 to that of men sends out a negative message about women's status and worth.  Hope all authority concerned will work towards ending gender related discrimination in every area of life. That is the only way of ensuring a society's commitment towards gender-justice and promoting gender equality.
