Essay, drawing competition marks Wildlife Week at Phek

Phek, October 11 (MExN): Celebration of Wildlife Week was held at Government High School Lozaphuhu village under Phek district with the theme ‘Big Cats- Predators under threat.’ The day was marked by essay and drawing competition to bring about awareness on the decline of predators and the importance of conserving it. Students from St. Mary’s School and Government High School participated in the event.  

Velatso Demo, Divisional Forest Officer, Phek in his message spoke on Big Cats and their importance to balance the ecosystem. The Jungle Dogs and Wild Boars are playing dominant role as predators with rapid decline of the tiger population. He mentioned that these animals are destroying paddy fields and predating the livestock which has become disastrous in the agrarian community. He also apprised the participants that the government is in process to aid the conserved areas every month or year to augment and beautify the wildlife habitats. The department needs young and old alike to revitalize the once rich abode of wild flora and fauna, he maintained.  

Vetsovo Hoshi from GHS emerged as winner of senior category in Essay Competition while DekholuVese from St. Mary’s School won in junior category. Velubu Rhakho from GHS clinched the prize in drawing competition. cash prizes along with citations were awarded to the second and third position winners.  

Rev. Fr. Martin, Vice Principal of St. Mary’s School invoked God’s blessings while Kevikho Vese, G/T of Govt. High School greeted the participants with a welcome address.   A host of village leaders and teachers from various schools also attended the programme.
