EUUN for action on textbook exclusion

Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): The Educated Unemployed Union of Nagaland demands that the chapter on the early history of the Nagas on SCERT class-VI social sciences textbook be scrapped unless reviewed and rectified. The union was taking cognizance of the omission of the names of two Naga tribes, the Rengma and Pochury, in the said text book.

In a representation addressed to the Chief Minster, the union that the said chapter should not be taught as part of the syllabus unless reviewed and rectified. A state-level committee was demanded to be set up to review and “amend the system of education.”  The union also called for action against the person “responsible” for the “exclusion” of the two tribes.

The EUUN took serious view that the “exclusion” was “discriminatory, unconstitutional and undemocratic.” It opined that impartment of education in schools must not “commence with gross injustice to some sections of the society.”

The government is asked to immediately take necessary action. It warned of an own course of action for which the union “shall not be held responsible.”

Mention may be made here that the SCERT had clarified on the matter, October 10, and an apology for the inadvertent error tendered. The SCERT had also clarified that assurances for rectification were given as early as September 19 to the RSU and PSU leaders, in a meeting with the SCERT director. It was also informed in the council’s clarification that the rectified textbooks would be made available by December 10 this year.
