Former Governor of Nagaland Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya, who was also known as PB Acharya passed away, early in the morning, today at his residence in Mumbai. He was 92 and had reportedly passed away due to old age illness.
Sharing close association with the northeastern states throughout his political career spanning many decades, the Udupi district native had served as the 18th Governor of Nagaland from July 2014 to July 2019. Late Acharya also served Governor of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. As a BJP Party worker, he was incharge of the Northeast from 1990s.
He laid to rest after a funeral service held in the evening in Mumbai. Leaders, individuals and the community of Nagaland has mourned the demise of the former Governor.
Chief Minister of Nagaland in a condolence message expressed shock and sadness over the demise of PB Acharya whom, the CM said he had the distinction of serving with three Chief Ministers of Nagaland, and having excellent rapport with all of them.
Describing his as one of the "most loved Governors of Nagaland," Rio said PB Acharya was a down to earth statesman and a noble soul, whose main concern was to serve the people. He had good relations with political parties across the spectrum in the State. He was particularly fond of children from destitute and welfare homes and opened his heart and Raj Bhavan Bhavan for them.
Rio reminisced the friendship he shared in the state and added that during his tenure in Nagaland, Acharya handed over library books to many schools as part of a mission to ensure that every school is equipped with a library. The CM said his death is a great loss to the nation, especially to people of Nagaland, with whom he had endeared himself as one of the most loved Governors of Nagaland.
The Raj Bhavan Kohima also expressed condolence to Kavita Acharya, wife of PB Acharya, whose absence "has left a void in all of us." The Raj Bhavan PRO in a condolence message feted the genuinely warm, hospitable, generous and down to earth person in the former Governor.
"His compassionate nature and unwavering concern for the welfare of the staff of Raj Bhavan Kohima will forever be cherished. His dedications to helping the less fortunate, particularly the orphans and destitute leaves behind a legacy of kindness and compassion," the press release stated.
Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland Y Patton described him as a straightforward and compassionate gentleman, whose love for Northeast India is unparalleled. "He would always propagate emotional and cultural integration of the region. His demise is a big loss for the region and the nation," the Deputy CM said in a condolence message.
On behalf of the state BJP legislators, the Patton extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed to rest in peace.
NLA Speaker Sharingain Longkumer said that late Acharaya was “one of the most revered leaders known for honesty, integrity and uprightness.” “He will be remembered for his eagerness to master tribal dialects and his initiatives to advocate for Naga languages in prominent universities across major cities and states in India. In his death, we have lost a visionary leader who made immense contribution for the betterment of Nagaland,” the Speaker said.
