Mon, January 12 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has strongly condemned the killing of two cadres of the NSCN-K (Ang Mai) faction in an alleged attack by a rival group inside Myanmar.
In a statement issued by KU President, K Yamao Konyak and General Secretary, Wango Konyak, it expressed “profound anguish and outrage” over the “brutal and senseless act of violence” that took place on January 9 at Khamtiang Village in Myanmar’s Naga Self-Administered Zone.
The incident reportedly resulted in the death of Lieutenant Avi Pochury and Sergeant Peyao Konyak, while another cadre was seriously injured in the alleged attack carried out by the NSCN-Yung Aung (YA) faction.
KU expressed anguish and outrage that such “fratricidal bloodshed” has occurred at the very onset of the New Year, a period meant for reflection, reconciliation and renewed commitment to peace. “Violence among Naga groups is a grave betrayal of the shared sacrifices, history and aspirations of the Naga people.”
“Such internal conflicts only weaken the Naga political movement, erode trust, and perpetuate fear and suffering among innocent civilians who yearn for peace and stability,” KU stated.
It asserted, “The continued loss of Naga lives at the hands of fellow Nagas is unacceptable and must cease immediately.”
The union sternly urged all Naga political factions to “exercise utmost restraint, respect the sanctity of human life, and abandon violence in favour of constructive dialogue and peaceful engagement.”
“Unity among Naga brothers and sisters is not optional, it is imperative for achieving a just, honourable, and lasting political solution,” it added.
KU extended its deepest condolences and solidarity to the bereaved families of the deceased cadres.
