Existence of poultry syndicate alarming: DCCI

Dimapur, August 12 (MExN): The recent disclosure by the Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) regarding the alleged syndicate system with regard to import of live chickens into Nagaland is indeed alarming, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DDCI) stated today.

The PUD recently alleged that the syndicate system is being operated to control the poultry supply in Karbi Anglong area in the neighbouring Assam state and imposed a ban on import of poultry into Nagaland from August 10 onwards.

What is more shocking is that the syndicate system is being authorised by the Karbi Anglong district administration in the form of the Taxes department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council setting up a check gate at Khatkhati, to intercept vehicles transporting chickens to Nagaland on the pretext of license checking, the DCCI stated in a press release.

Accordingly, the DCCI in a press statement issued by its Vice-President V Shikuto Sema, reiterated that there should not be any syndicate system, whether in poultry or any other businesses, in Dimapur and the whole of Nagaland.

The syndicate system has for long stifled healthy competition in business, especially at the cost of local entrepreneurs and small time businessmen, it said.

The DCCI has always been at the forefront against any form of monopoly or unfair trade practices, especially in the commercial hub Dimapur, it added.

The DCCI further noted that the total ban on import of live chickens is affecting almost every household in Nagaland as well as restaurants, eateries and hotels.

To this end, the DCCI wondered why the State Government and the Dimapur district administration have not come up with any concrete action and update the public on the issue so far.

The Chamber also extended its full support to the PUD’s “fight against the syndicate system” noting that the system will deprive the local poultry traders and farmers of their profit margin and ultimately, their livelihood.

The DCCI members along with members of the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) also visited the inter-state check gate on August 11, to extend solidarity to the PUD, it informed.
