‘Expand horizon of Naga wrestling to all Naga tribes’

NWA Senior Free Style Wrestling Championship 2022 concludes

The Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) conducted Senior Free Style Wrestling Championship 2022 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on November 26.

Gracing the inaugural function, Phowang Konyak, Advisor, Fire & Emergency Service, SIRD and Relief & Rehabilitation Nagaland called upon NWA to expand the horizon of Naga wrestling to all the Naga tribes. “You have to teach them (other tribes) about the tactics of Naga wrestling,” he urged NWA.

 

He expressed happiness that apart from Angami, Chakhesang and Zeliang, the Lotha and Phom tribes are also now showing interest to take up Naga wrestling. He urged the NWA to continue to preserve and promote the traditional game of Naga wrestling in the state.

He said that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has been putting his best effort to promote games and sports in the state.

NWA President, Dr Hiabe Zeliang talked on the importance of free style wrestling, which is gaining popularity. He said that the winner in each category shall represent the state at the forthcoming National selection competition in December 2022. He urged the wrestlers to be sincere, determine and committed to excel in the field of sports.

Earlier, the inaugural function was chaired by NWA joint secretary Amos Pame while Kikhwesül Thokhwe, co-opted technical secretary NWA administered oath to the participants. Later, K Puro, former vice president, Wrestling Federation of India graced the closing ceremony and gave away prizes to the winners.
