Experts from CGIAR Research Centers visits ICAR-NRCM

Dimapur, August 1 (MExN): Team Experts from CGIAR Research Centers Dr Habirar Rahman, ILRI regional representative, South Asia, and former Deputy Director General (Animal Science); Dr V P Singh, Regional Representative for South Asia, CIAT and Dr U S Singh, South Asia regional coordinator and India country representative, CIP visited ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR-NRCM) Medziphema, on August 1.
A press release issued by the Director ICAR- National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema stated that the team is visiting Nagaland to discuss the opportunity for providing technical support associated with livestock component for the project FOCUS supported by IFAD to the Government of Nagaland.
While visiting the Institute, Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRCM briefed the delegation about the Institute activities as well as the prospect of mithun farming in North-Eastern Hilly states including Nagaland.
“The ICAR-NRC on Mithun is promoting semi-intensive rearing as an alternative to traditional free-range mithun rearing under forest ecosystem. Mithun though primarily reared as a meat animal but it has tremendous potential for providing livelihoods to the region and can be diversified as a source of milk, draught power, and leather,” the release added.
The release also stated that the delegation also visited the Institute's Mithun Farm and witnessed the semi-intensive mithun rearing being practiced. “Mithun milk, which contains as high as 8-10% fat, was also offered to the visiting dignitaries,” it added.
The visit was coordinated by Dr Auto V, Department of Veterinary & AH, Government of Nagaland and Dr Stephen S Hanah, Scientist of ICAR-NRCM.
