We are a big problem family today: political problem, corrupt politicians problem, economic problem, unemployed problem, underground problem, drug problem, alcohol problem, HIV/AIDS problem, bad road problem; continue counting problems, there are many problems, indeed.
Very disturbing menacingly threatening is extortion. Many local news papers have written on this. It still exists, this seems unstoppable too. It is most unwanted. Naga homes will be much happier without it.
But while extortionists deserve the noisiest sound and maximum hate from people whose life and homestead devastated by unlawful taxation, and extortion, there are other varieties of extortionists who are no less loathsome and terminally destroying Naga homes: “technical extortion”, “evangelical robbing” in government offices and other sanctimoniously religious fronts under and behind variable covers.
Apart from over ground politicians, contractors, engineers, directors, commissioners or department heads, there are middle ground actors between underground groups and government offices. These go-betweens include government employees. They educate, inform and mentor the armed groups as they are fairly benefitted by the exploits. Naga allegiance, loyalty and royalty to a long delayed unresolved conflict since they (the Nagas) determinedly resisted intrusion has, indeed, incurred immense expenditure in terms of hundred and thousand lives and human tragedies on both Nagas and the intruders as well. The rigid and collective decision of Naganess must be bifurcated from reckless and unthinking sectors – under ground groups, over ground people and the middle grounds as well. These more vulnerable segments of larger and unputdownable Nagas, have been instrumental towards further divide, delay and dismal past. We have dearly paid for which we do not owe and deserve on account of this purchasable lot.
There is one more fact Nagas can never pretend not knowing: the selected few and undeservingly privileged sector. This includes politicians and their chamchas. They might disagree with the then NPC’s 16-point agreement to which present state of Nagaland is the brain child. But the child Nagaland has equally nurtured even those who disown it while, at the same time, they are milking the Naga political issue. This is one and the biggest problem; it is ridiculous too. Neither congress nor BJP or any political parties – national and regional- are Nagas’ enemy. The problem is our politicians who are unwilling to wean away from the real source of momentary power, money and position. They are well aware that a complete turn around and a new start that may come along with settlement with GOI can never give them bigger joy or comfort than what they are today. The thought of swapping their present position for a anew lease of life affecting all section of common Naga majorities may not be their agenda.
Let us sum up: the three classes of thief are: general thieves, politicians and, of course, our children. The ‘other three’ classes of extortion – politicians, not all of them, but many of them; bureaucrats? Lots of them. NGOs? Less of them. Church workers? Sanctimoniously non of them and, of course, underground groups? Variably plenty of them.
Finally, ours is a Christian state. Fellowship services and fasting abound! Fasting also entails many Fs: feasting, fuming, fighting, firing, frightening and farting and many more. Shout your mouth up. The stench is everywhere.
I leave the most condemned and the most practiced "f" for you to make out.
