Dimapur, March 24 (MExN): In observance of World Glaucoma Week from March 8 to 14, District Hospital Dimapur in collaboration with Lions Club of Dimapur Elite conducted an eye screening camp and awareness programme at Ramjanaki Higher Secondary School.
The programme was held under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI) with the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.” It was organised under the leadership of Lions Club president Meena Sethi, with Reema Jain and Payal Jain as chairpersons.
The awareness session and screening camp were led by Dr Asonla Aying Chang, Senior Specialist at District Hospital Dimapur, along with a team of nurses and ophthalmic assistants. The school principal was also present.
The programme focused on creating awareness about glaucoma, myopia, overall eye care, and computer vision syndrome. Participants were informed about the importance of regular eye check-ups, especially since glaucoma progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs.
Students from classes 4 to 12, along with teachers, school staff, and club members, took part in the programme. More than 140 individuals underwent eye screening during the camp. Eye drops and medicines were distributed to those in need, and teachers were also screened.
During the screening, several students were identified for further check-ups and advised to use corrective glasses. Cases of myopia and high myopia were also detected.
Students were encouraged to adopt healthy eye care practices, including studying in proper lighting, limiting screen time, and maintaining a balanced diet.
