‘Farmers have role to play to achieve ‘Food for all by 2015’’

Kiphire, March 22 (MExN): District Agriculture Officer, Kiphire, Renbemo Ngullie today lamented that many progressive farmers are being sent for exposure trip, but the input they give back is not encouraging. Speaking as special guest at a training on climate resilient agriculture organized by Farmers Club, Amahator area here, he asked the farmers and especially those farmers sent for exposure trip to teach fellow farmers who could not avail the opportunity. The training held at Arkah piggery farm for farmers of Amahator area was sponsored by C. Kipili Sangtam, parliamentary secretary, Power.

Renbemo Ngullie further stated that the policy of ‘Food for all by 2025’ is the responsibility of all, adding, to achieve this target, farmers have a lot of role to play. He assured the farmers of assistance to improve farming in the district.   

The special guest also stated, taking up crops or activities which are not suitable for soil and geography will lead to nowhere and advised the farmers to cultivate crops which will bring good return. He also disclosed that one acre of land which is accessible for exposure trip and training will be adopted for pilot project for Sugarcane.

In his keynote address, Senkha, Horticultural Officer, Kiphire stressed that climate resilient agriculture has become a global issue which is discussed all over the globe. He added that production of food grains such as rice, wheat is decreasing over the years whereas population is increasing which is a big challenge for all. Stating Jhum as harmful type of agriculture for environment, he asserted, “It is time for us to find alternative method of agriculture so as to save from further environment degradation.”

Coming out with suggestion for alternative method of livelihood, the Horticulture Officer said, Jhum Park, Butterfly Park, Mushroom Park, Orange Park, Apple Park, Apiculture Park can be established if only the people in the district know how to live together without having any tribal color.

Kilemsangba District Horticulture Officer, who also spoke on the occasion declared Amahator area as cardamom belt. Pudusul Luho, District Planning Officer, and Dr T. Tsilise, VAS, Kiphire also spoke on the occasion.

In the technical session, resource persons were V.Chelladurai, General Manager, NABARD; T.Kirithong Proprietor, Arkha piggery farm; Lima Akum .Deputy Project Director, ATMA; Ellen from Land Resources; and Kekosenuo, Block Technology Manager, ATMA.
