Farmers sensitised on PPV & FR Act 2001

Longleng, March 26 (MExN): Considering the importance and urgency of the protection, conservation and registration of the available bio resources of the state with the PPV & FR Authority, KVK Dimapur, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema has taken initiative for the benefit of the farming community by organizing two days ‘Training cum awareness programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right (PPV & FR) Act, 2001 and Farmers Variety Registration.’  

The day long training cum awareness programme sponsored by the PPV&FRA Authority, New Delhi was conducted at Dhansiripar village on March 17 with Mhalo Humtsoe, SDO (Civil), Dhansiripar Block as the chief guest of the programme. A total of 120 participants from Dhansiripar and adjoining villages attended the programme. Dr. A.H. Khan, Deputy Registrar, PPV & FRA Regional Office, Guwahati and Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh, Plant Variety Examiner, PPV&FRA Regional Office, Guwahati also attended the programme.  

Dr. A.H. Khan elaborated on the implementation of PPV & FR Act, 2001, Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh spoke on Registration and Protection of Farmers’ Rights under PPV & FRA and Dr. Kolom Rabi, ACTO (Plant Breeding) KVK Dimapur spoke on the Farmers Variety Registration and its procedures.  

As continuation of the programme one day on campus training cum awareness programme was also conducted at KVK Dimapur on March 26 wherein a total of 54 farmers participated the programme from Pherima, Seithekema C, Peren town, Medziphema, Dhansiripar, Amaluma, Beisumpuikam, Jalukiekam and Sarupathar ( Assam). Dr. Harendra Verma, Scientist (Plant Breeding), ICAR Nagaland Centre, give a lecture on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right (PPV&FR) Act, 2001.  

A total of 17 farmers’ varieties which include 13 rice varieties, 1 maize variety, 1 Banana variety, 1 turmeric variety and 1 of Colocasia varieties were collected for their registration with PPV & FR Authority during the two days programme. Also leaflets on PPV & FR Act 2001 translated in Nagamese dialect along with the registration forms were distributed to the farmers.
