The Department of Agriculture in Tuensang organised a one-day training session on modern crop production technology for various Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at their head office in Tuensang town on May 28.
The event aimed to enhance farmers' knowledge and preparedness for potential pest outbreaks, promoting agriculture as a viable income source.
Sentilong Ozukum, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Tuensang, served as the special guest. He emphasized the significant role of women in transforming the farming system through active participation. Ozukum encouraged women's groups to pursue agriculture to support their families and livelihoods. He also spoke about the deep-rooted connection between Naga culture and agriculture, noting that many state festivals celebrate agricultural significance.
District Agriculture Officer, T Supongmar Longchar delivered the keynote address, explaining the training's objectives. He highlighted the importance of modern agriculture practices, pest outbreak preparedness, and adopting agriculture as a sustainable and profitable sector.
During the technical sessions, T Supongmar Longchar discussed different cropping systems, focusing on the benefits of alder-based farming and intercropping in jhum fields. Wongto Chingmak, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer, covered production technology for agricultural crops, emphasizing quality seed selection, organic pest management, and intercultural operations. Chaangsunny, Agriculture Field Assistant, and Tangekeiba, Agriculture Inspector, provided insights on managing Fall Army Worms and rodent pests, respectively.
The training session, attended by 40 farmers and departmental officials, was chaired by Moameren, Agriculture Officer. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Bangbe, Agriculture Field Assistant.
