Farmers urged to conserve and protect their rights

Training on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights’ held

Mon, March 9 (MExN): One day training-cum-awareness and sensitization programme on ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights’ was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mon on March 9 at KVK conference hall, Aboi. The training was sponsored by Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Authority (PPV & FRA), New Delhi and attended by 100 practicing farmers from different village level institutions.  

Speaking as the chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Aboi Hito Sema urged the farmers to conserve and protect their own rights in collaboration with the KVK Mon for registering the locally available land races. He appreciated the efforts and contribution of KVK Mon in promoting and registration of the farmer’s varieties. Besides, District Public Relation Officer, Mon K. Akai encouraged the farmers to adopt scientific method of farming, also called upon the farmers to understand and implement the PPV & FRA.  

The programme was chaired by Dr. Paihem Michui, Asst. Chief Technical Officer (Animal Science) and also welcomed the gathering, while Yanching Konyak, Pastor, Nagamese Baptist Fellowship, Aboi invoked God’s blessing. Dr. M. S. Sachan, ACTO (Genetics & Plant Breeding) highlighted the importance of PPV & FR, Act, 2001 followed by release of extension bulletin and folder by the chief guest.  

During the technical session ACTO (GPB) presented the role of PPV & FRA, importance of plant genetic resources, its collection and documentation, overview of PPV & FRA, breeders rights and farmers rights, registration of plant varieties, rectification and filling of application form for registration and procedures in PPV & FR, besides, Biodiversity in the hills of North East India was presented by ACTO (Animal Science).  

Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK, Mon in a press release stated that a healthy interactive session was held with the farmers wherein the queries were answered by the resource persons. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by S. Monyu Konyak, Office Supt.-cum-Acctt.
