Fast-track courts till March 2010

Kohima, July 18 (MExN): Two fast-track courts headed by Additional District & Sessions Judge with their headquarters at Dimapur and Kohima were established in 2003  to dispose backlogs of criminal cases. According to the annual administrative report of the department of Justice and Law, these establishments are fully funded by the Government of India. The legal apparatus is to continue for a further period of five years, till March 31, 2010. During the year, 149 cases were disposed off by the two courts. According to the proposals of the department for the year 2009-2010, a district court at Longleng, headed by the Additional District & Sessions Judge has been proposed. 

The department proposes to construct a new high court complex at an estimated cost of Rs. 146.30 Crore, and also to construct a district court complex at Wokha, Tuensang and Mokokchung, at an estimated cost of Rs. 750 lakhs. Construction of customary courts is another important programme, the report said. The department proposes to construct 22 more customary courts in the EAC headquarters of Nagaland at an estimated cost of Rs. 330 lakhs. The department also proposes to provide accommodation to judicial and prosecution officers including supporting staffer, in all the district headquarters. This is understood to be undertaken in phases for the financial year 2009-2010.
