FEDCUTA laments over UGC and MHRD decision

New Delhi, July 19 (MExN): The Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA) has expressed its anguish over the decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in withdrawing its decision to exempt M.Phils and all Ph.Ds from requirement of NET. This has been informed here in a press release issued by Aditya Narayan Misra, president and Tabrez Alam Khan, General Secretary, FEDCUTA.

It stated that on the recommendations of Prof. Mungekar Committee of the MHRD and the UGC announced to exempt M.Phil up to March 2009 and all Ph.Ds from requirement of NET for eligibility of lecturership and assistant professorship. Taking the opportunity lakhs of students in the country joined and completed these research degrees but now that the UGC and MHRD have decided to withdraw the exemption retrospectively which has created a situation of uncertainty for careers of these researchers.

The FEDCUTA in the note stated that the decision of the UGC and MHRD is also in violation of the UGC Act, which clearly specifies that “any decision of the UGC would not retrospectively affect any person”. Besides demanding review of the decision of UGC / MHRD on NET, the FEDCUTA has also demanded rectification in the fixation tables for revised salaries of associate professors and professors as well as revision of grade pay of assistant professors. The fixation tables as released by MHRD and UGC are at variance from the stipulations in the MHRD notification on pay revision of teachers and thus put the teachers at loss.

Meanwhile, the FEDCUTA in its executive meeting has called for one-day protest strike by teachers in all the central universities in the country on July 23, it stated.
