Teachers of universities and colleges in Manipur on Monday set September 23 as deadline to the Manipur government for adoption of 7th Pay Commission and UGC Regulations, 2018.

"If no positive response comes forth from the government regarding the demands, teachers will launch various forms of agitation including cease work strike from the next day,” the Federation of Government College Teachers’ Association, Manipur (FEGOCTA) threatened on Monday.

Addressing a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, FEGOGTA general secretary, Dr N Somorendro Singh informed the ultimatum has been served to the chief minister, Education minister, the chief secretary, the principal secretary (Finance), the commissioner and the director of state Education (higher and university) department.

He threatened that if no positive response comes forth from the government side with regard to their demands within the set deadline, teachers of universities and colleges will resort to various forms of protest.

Dr N Somorendro Singh hinted that the teachers may launch stirs like mass casual, cease work strike and other forms of agitations until a positive response comes forth from the government side. He also said that the association had already submitted a memorandum for adoption of 7th Pay Commission and UGC Regulations, 2018 for the government college teachers on three occasions, the latest one being on February 7, 2019 to the chief minister, the deputy chief minister, the Education minister, the chief secretary and the commissioner of Higher Education among other related officials.

He then said that the federation has been pressing the state government to adopt the 7th Pay to the teachers of the universities and colleges since November, 2017.

While the demand is yet to be considered by the state government, the latest UGC Regulations 2018 having 7th Pay and qualifications for recruitment and promotion of the teachers in universities and colleges were issued on July 18, 2018..

"The state government had also ordered adoption of pay structure recommended by the 7th Central Commission from 2020. However, the order left out teachers of colleges and universities", Dr N Somorendro Singh alleged.

The FEGOCTA general secretary then said that teachers of the universities and colleges have no desire to go on strike that amount to affect the academic atmosphere of the students. "Inviting strikes and protests from the college teachers for implementation of 7th pay and UGC Regulations, 2018 will not be in the interest of higher education in Manipur", he said and drew the attention of the state government to consider their demands positively before the expiry of the set deadline.
