A press release from Captain (Retd) Yirei Lungleng, Rali Wali Kilonser, FGN informed that since the “sovereign Naga people (our people) democratically constituted the Naga National Council (NNC) on February 2, 1946 at Wokha Village to safeguard the sovereign birthright of our people as a Nation, the Naga National Council (NNC), with the vow and assurance of Mahatma Gandhi on 19th July, 1947 at Bhangi Colony in New Delhi, formally declared the age-old Naga Independence on 14th August, 1947 one day ahead before India was set free by the British on 15 August, 1947.”

It added that on the same day “NNC informed India by telegram, and cabled to the HMG and UNO for information and record.” “We have celebrated this auspicious day of our Nation every year without any hindrance by the grace of God since 1947 in existence of our Nation despite all odds,” it said.
