FGN denies link to alleged illegal taxation, extortion activities

KOHIMA, DECEMBER 19 (MExN): The Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) has issued a circular denying any involvement in alleged illegal taxation and extortion activities and disowning individuals or groups claiming affiliation with it.

Referring to reports surrounding the arrest of a 71-year-old man on December 9, the FGN said the individual had claimed to be a deputy chaplee kilonser, a post which, it asserted, does not exist within its organisational structure.

In the circular issued by its Ministry of Chaplee (Finance), the FGN stated that there is only one Naga National Council (NNC) and Federal Government of Nagaland, with Adinno Phizo as president of the NNC and Kezha Angami as kedahge of the FGN.

The statement cautioned the public against individuals or groups claiming to represent the NNC or FGN and said such claims were unauthorised. It asserted that no individual or group has the right to collect taxes or extort money from the general Naga public in the name of the NNC or FGN.

The FGN further claimed that, under the Lakhuti Resolution of 1955, there is only one national institution and platform, namely the NNC, and said it would take action against what it described as criminal elements operating under its name.

The circular reiterated the organisation’s position that it does not recognise any unauthorised taxation or extortion and warned against the misuse of its nomenclature for such activities.
