Nagaland’s CAWD & Taxes advisor Küdecho Khamo today called upon the people to fight against alcoholism and drugs at all cost.
“Development is meaningless if its people are destroyed,” he said while addressing the 42nd General Session of the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) as the special guest at Chizami on January 24 under the theme “Unity is Strength.”
Talking on Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1989, Khamo said that the Act was enacted by Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) under immense pressure from NBCC in particular due to the hazardous affect of health, money, life, broken families, creating widows & orphanage, public nuisance and many more.
“It was most appropriate that this law was enforced in a state dominated by Christians,” he said adding that the prohibition of liquor in Nagaland suits a Christian state as “it is in the best interest of each Christian as for his/her spiritual and physical wellbeing.”
“We cannot be inconsistent; go to church and worship God and move out of the church to oppose God! Revenue now is a temptation to ruin human lives!,” he said. However, he said, we are failing to implement the law effectively because we are yet to implement the Act sincerely. “It will surely be affective and successful if there is a will,” Khamo said.
Stating that there are certain CSOs and individuals propagating for lifting the Act, he said “These lobbyists’ strong point is that the NLTPA has only caused revenue loss to the state’s exchequer.”
“As for me, I will continue support the Act at all cost so also the Chakhesang tribe will never support lifting of the Act,” he said.
The reason is that we cannot afford to have the enhanced revenue at the cost of good human beings; the God fearing man is better that anything else. We may enhance revenue but will get curse from God, Khamo said.
He thanked Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for understanding the reality and the sentiment of the right thinking people including the Churches and not lifting in spite of the pressures from certain CSO and individuals.
On economic front, Khamo called for venturing into “Each family One project, Each family One entrepreneur and Each family One Prayer time.”
He said that no one or no forces should be allowed to destroy the bond of unity among the Chakhesangs. He maintained that everything is possible when people are united.
“There should not be any room for disunity among us”
Delivering short speech, Nagaland’s power & parliamentary affairs minister KG Kenye called upon the people to strengthen the bond of friendship and unity amongst the Chakhesang community and help each other for all round development.
There should not be any room for disunity among us, he said.
Neposo Theliio, IAS (Retd), member, Nagaland Public Service Commission, called upon the people to live upto the principle of tolerance, acceptance and apology. The society will never go wrong when we practice such principles in letter and spirit, he said.
Stating that economic activities come to complete halt during December to February in Chakhesang areas following festive season and other social activities, he suggested formation of study committee to find out huge expenditure involved. He also encouraged mass weddings within Chakhesang jurisdiction.
With 2 lane road projects within Phek district, Thulüo called upon the people to venture into hotel industry. He also called upon the people to seize the prospect of cultural tourism in consonance with coining of Phek district as “Land of Traditions.”
Chakhesang Scholars Forum (CSF) chairman Dr Zavise Rume said that education is the sole route to catch up with modern advancement. Stating that composite school policy has been put in place, he stressed on the need to enhance enrolment in government schools.
Earlier, CPO president Veziihii Keyho delivered presidential address while Tenyimi Union Nagaland (TUN) president Kekhwengulo Lea shared greetings.
The programme was chaired by CPO vice president Ezekowe K Tara while welcome speech was delivered by Chizami Village Council chairman Kewepelo Tsuha.
