A major fire incident occurred at St Stephen Higher Secondary School located in Industrial Village, Razüphe, Dimapur on Sunday afternoon, causing substantial damage to a storage room within the premises.

According to an official at Fire Station West Dimapur, a distress call was received at approximately 3:11 PM, prompting the deployment of four fire tender trucks from both West and Central Fire Station Dimapur to the scene.

The fire reportedly broke out in the storage room of the school, which houses various construction materials, oil paints, etc., kept in six different compartments partitioned by plywood.

The entire episode lasted about 45 minutes, and the firefighters were able to prevent the inferno from spreading to the other adjoining buildings in the area, the official said.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit, he added.

As per the official, initial estimates provided by school authorities put the property losses due to the fire at around Rs 15 lakh. Among the damaged items was a motorcycle stored within the storage room.
