In observance of Fire Service Week 2025, the Wokha Fire and Emergency Services conducted a week-long programme dedicated to martyrs and fire safety mass awareness from April 14 onwards. The event culminated with a live demonstration on fire safety held, under the theme “Unite to Ignite, a Fire Safe India” at APMC, Wokha village on April 21.

The initiative was aimed at honouring fallen firefighters and raising awareness among the public regarding fire prevention and safety practices.

Thenuosielie Pielie, 2nd Officer-in-Charge, Fire and Emergency Services, Wokha highlighted the dual objective of the programme commemorating the sacrifices of past firefighters and educating the community about essential fire safety measures.

During his address, Pielie elaborated on best practices for preventing incidents involving Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), kitchen fires, and electrical fires. He stressed the importance of always keeping LPG cylinders in an upright position, away from heat and direct sunlight, and ensuring that the safety cap and company seal are intact before use. Regular maintenance such as replacing rubber tubes every six months and proper ventilation when using LPG appliances were also emphasised.

For kitchen safety, residents were advised to never leave cooking unattended, avoid overheating oil, and refrain from using water to extinguish grease fires. The need for a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and safe distances between the hearth and gas cylinder were also underscored.

Concerning electrical safety, Pielie warned against overloading sockets, using non-ISI marked appliances, and attempting DIY repairs. He recommended the installation of protective devices like MCBs and fuses, along with proper maintenance of wiring and cautious use of heavy-load appliances.

The programme further addressed fire prevention and mitigation strategies, urging residents and building owners to install hydrant systems, fire detectors, and alarms. It was advised that evacuation routes be kept clear, and authorised professionals be consulted for fire safety installations.

Later, the fire and Emergency service team showcased a live demonstration of fire-handling techniques, first aid procedures, and methods for carrying injured persons. Attendees were given hands-on training in the use of fire extinguishers and basic emergency response skills, enhancing community preparedness in the face of fire-related emergencies.
