The first-ever Mango Festival in Longmatra town, Kiphire district, was successfully held on July 19, organised by the District Administration in collaboration with the District Horticulture Office.

The event was graced by Kiusumew Yimchunger, MLA and Advisor for Home Guard & Civil Defence, Fire & Emergency Services, and Relief & Rehabilitation, as the Special Guest. Deputy Commissioner of Kiphire, Temsuwati Longkumer, NCS, attended as the Guest of Honour. Village leaders and mango farmers from various villages under Longmatra block were also present.

In his address, Yimchunger lauded the initiative, stating that the festival celebrated not only the unity and sacrifice of the 13 villages under Longmatra block, but also showcased the vibrant tradition of mango cultivation in the region.

He noted that the Nagaland government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, is prioritising the upliftment of farmers to strengthen the rural economy. He assured continued departmental support but urged farmers to make judicious use of government assistance to improve local livelihoods.

Guest of honour Temsuwati Longkumer appreciated the efforts of the EAC Longmatra, DHO Kiphire, LAPO and the local community in organising the festival. He said the event served as a platform to highlight the contributions of farmers and promote local mango varieties that are often overlooked in larger markets.

He stressed the need for better marketing channels, storage infrastructure and the promotion of agri-tourism. He also encouraged farmers to adopt modern agricultural techniques while preserving traditional practices.

Longkumer urged youth and women self-help groups to explore mango-based entrepreneurship such as pickle-making, juice production, and other value-added products.
The festival concluded with a mango eating competition, followed by the distribution of certificates and prizes to participating farmers.

Earlier, Takatemjen Pongen, EAC Longmatra, delivered the welcome address. Short speeches were given by A. Throngethe, President of LAGBU, and Sentinungba Longchar, District Horticulture Officer, Kiphire. The programme was chaired by Apiba A. Sangtam.
