First-hand lessons to nurture a healthy environment

Kohima, May 28 (MExN): The Agriculture & Environment Education Section of School Education department has completed its first phase of environmental training for the middle school teachers under the theme “Green is survival” on May 26.

N. Khevito, Joint Secretary, School Education graced the programme as the chief guest. In his address, he urged the trainees to 'strip off the garments of hostile attitude' towards the environment and appealed to them to put on the 'new dress of friendly attitude' towards the environment.

The trainees said that, training resources provided by three departments are relevant to the present situation. One of them said that coming from far flung areas, particularly from the rural areas, they need to update their knowledge with the latest information to inspire 'the slumbering creative minds.'

Resource person from  the Nagaland Pollution Control Board held sessions on pollution and its effects, solid-waste management, environmental issues and impact assessment, National Green Corps and formation of eco-club by student members at school level so that each member would start environment-conscious activities at schools and home by adopting the principle of the 3 Rs- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Officers from the Deputy Director Horticulture department also stressed on the methods involved in  coconut usages for composting, mushroom culturing in backyards, vegetative propagation of flowers as well as fruits plants, by different techniques and vermin composting.

The training programme touched on environmental education, focusing on climate change (Global warning) due to increasing emission of carbon dioxide and other pollutants leading to Green House effects , depletion of the Ozone layer etc.

“One of the concluding activities of trainees as an exercise of the environment- concerned citizen was collecting solid wastes inside the Green Park thrown by visitors who don't have environmental awareness,” said Pollem Tep, Assistant Director and Training  Coordinator.

The solid-wastes collected by the trainees from under trees , hedges and road sides included Tobacco product covers, plastic carry bags, fruit juice containers/cans, fast food packaging materials, plastic water bottles etc.

Garbage so collected was gathered into garbage bins.

“By this action, the trainees would realize the importance of cleanliness and beauty of clean litter free environments. This first dose of environment education can boost the sensitivity of the teachers towards the environment,” according to the Cordinator.
