First inter-school Sepaktakraw tournament in Wokha underway

WOKHA, OCTOBER 6 (MExN): The first inter-school Sepaktakraw tournament organised by Wokha District Sepaktakraw Association (WDSA- Sepak) kicked off today at the local ground with Y. Orenbomo Lotha, DPO, Wokha as the special guest. 

Addressing the inaugural, Y. Orenbomo Lotha urged the students to dedicate themselves to any given assignment with zeal and dedication, while pointing out that only through dedication they can be able to achieve their goals.

Beside education, Lotha told the students to give due interest in the field of sport, which is a highly respected profession for those excelling in it. He encouraged the students to be disciplined as sports gather an attribution of dedication, health discipline and mental wellness. 

Lotha Student’ Union president, Lirhonthung E Kithan, in a short speech appealed the students to do away with all intoxicant substances as it affects their future careers and their health. He told the students to compete in the tournament in the true spirit of games and reminded them to give their soul, mind and spirit so as they become professionals. 

Appreciating the effort of K. Libemo Jami, District Youth Resource Officer cum District Sports Officer, Wokha, Kithan said that through a dynamic and dedicate officer in Wokha, today the district is seeing changes and improvement in various field of sports.

WDSA president, T Thungchibemo Lotha, in his welcome address, highlighted the formation of Sepaktakraw Association in Wokha district and acknowledged the support of DYRO cum DSO Wokha. He said that WDSA-Sepak formed in the year 2021 was able to secure the runner-ups in 2022 at inter district Sepaktakraw tournament in Nagaland.

He said that with proper skills and technique, Naga community can easily excel in the sport, while also pointing out that two girls from Nagaland are currently representing India in Sepaktakraw in the Asian Games 2023.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by T Zubenthung Odyuo, Treasurer, WDSA-Sepak and Rev. Mhonyamo Ngullie, Administrator, Cistus School, Wokha said the invocation prayer. N Amos Humtsoe, General Secretary, WDSA delivered a vote of thanks and also initiated the oath taking where the tournament was declared open by the special guest.

All together 16 teams from five schools in the category of under 14 & 17 for men and senior girls are vying for the tournament.
