On January 30, Nagaland will witness the first state tug of war championship. The championship is being organised by the Western Chakhesang Youth Organisation (WCYO) in collaboration with the Nagaland Tug Of War Association (NToWA).
At a press conference on January 22, NToWA President, Dr Er Vekho Swuro extended invitation to all communities to sign up for the competition — 1st Inter-Ethnic Community Tug of War Championship cum Ethnic Community Food Festival — which seeks to promote harmony among the various ethnic communities across the country with ‘Oneness on the hope for peace’ as underlying theme.
Swuro informed that the competition will have a pool of 42 teams. The format will be ‘freestyle’ with single-elimination or knockout in the initial rounds and the semi-finals and final featuring best of three match ups. It will be a one-day event at the DDSC Stadium, Dimapur. According to him, the rope will be as per the specifications of the international governing body for tug of war.
If all the team slots are not filled by the last date of registration, Swuro said that other groups/teams will be accommodated “on first come first serve” basis. He further extended invitation to the security forces, including the police to register for the competition.
In addition to tug of war, the event will feature an ethnic food festival and performances by Naga music artistes. The state’s tallest person, Yungan Konyak, standing at 6 feet and 10 inches tall will also show up at the event.
WCYO President, Wekupe Therie informed that January 24 will be the last date of registration, which will be followed by the drawing of fixture. He asked all the team managers to be present in person during the drawing. Entry tickets are priced at Rs 1000 (donors) and Rs 50 for gallery. The fee for opening food stalls is Rs 1000, while the fee for team registration is Rs 5000. Rs 1 lakh will be the prize for the champions.
