First sitting of the NLA Committee on Petition held

Kohima, AUGUST 10 (MExN): The Committee on Petition (2023-2024) of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly held its first sitting on July 25 in the Committee Room of Assembly Secretariat under the Chairmanship of K Konngam Konyak, Advisor, Treasuries & Accounts and Art & Culture, a press statement issued by NLA Secretariat informed. 

During the meeting, Chairman K Konngam Konyak drew the attention of the members to the powers and functions of the Committee. He briefed the members that the mandate of the Committee is to examine every petition referred to it and if the petition complies with the rules, it may direct that the petition may be circulated, where however, circulation of petition has not been directed by the Committee, the Speaker may at any time direct that petition be circulated. 

The Committee should report to the House its findings on specific complaints made in the petitions referred to it after taking such evidence as it deems fit and suggest remedial measures either in a concrete form applicable to the case under review or prevent recurrence of such cases in future. 

The Chairman also stated that the petitions may relate to a bill which has been published under Rule 64 or which has been introduced in the House, any matter connected with the business pending before the House. 

The petition may also relate to any matter of general public interest provided that it is not one which falls within the cognizance of a court of law having jurisdiction in any part of India or a court of inquiry or a statutory tribunal or authority or a quasi judicial body or a Commission, which should ordinarily be raised in Parliament or any other State Legislature, which can be raised on a substantive motion or resolution.
