Dimapur, August 3 (MExN): The first Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University Prof I Yanger passed away early this morning at around 3:30 am after a prolonged illness at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune. He was 78 and is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. The late professor is the third son of the second Naga graduate and eminent educationist late Padmashri Mayangnokcha of Changki village.
A family source said that the professor’s health started to decline in 2004 and needed medical attention. He was moved to Pune with his daughter, where he was kept under medical supervision till date. Another source informed that the mortal remains of the late professor will reach Mokokchung tomorrow, August 4 via Jorhat. The funeral service will be held day after tomorrow, August 5, 11:00 am in Mokokchung town.
Recollecting the past years, Prof B Tekalong, a former colleague, nostalgically said “Prof Yanger took keen interest in plantation of trees around Fazl Ali College campus, which was actively supported by the staff, teachers and the then DFO of Mokokchung late Imnuk.” He added that most of the trees in the college’s campus were planted by teachers led by Prof I Yanger and that they will remain as a memory to cherish although he has left the mortal world.
Rio mourns Yanger’s death
Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio mourns the demise of Prof I Yanger. “One of the pioneering Naga officers, the contributions made by late Yanger for the growth of education and the Nagaland University during its initial stage is indeed invaluable and will be long remembered. He was sincere, hardworking and an upright officer.
The demise of Prof I Yanger, a well respected elderly citizen is not only an irreparable loss to the family members but also to the entire Naga people and particularly the Ao tribe,” said the CM in a condolence message. Rio and his wife, Kaisa Rio conveys deepest condolences to all the members of the bereaved family. “May God give you strength to bear the irreparable loss and pray that the departed soul rest in eternal peace,” Rio prayed.
NU expresses deep sadness
The Vice Chancellor, officers, faculty, staff and students of Nagaland University have also expressed deep sadness over the ‘untimely demise’ of Prof I Yanger, the first vice chancellor of Nagaland University. “The contributions of Prof I Yanger in establishing and building the only central university in Nagaland as the founder Vice-Chancellor will ever be remembered by all sections of the university community. Though Prof I Yanger has left this world for his heavenly home, his accomplishment for the university will last forever,” stated the NU Registrar Dr PH Naik in a condolence message received here today.
“At this hour of distress, the members of the university community share the untold grief of the bereaved family members and pray to the Almighty God to give them strength and solace,” the message stated. Besides, the Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (Lumami) has also expressed deep anguish over the demise of Prof I Yanger.
The NUTA (L) in a condolence message issued by it vice president, Dr MK Sinha and general secretary Likhase Sangtam, while expressing shock over the ‘unfortunate demise’ of first NU VC, Prof I Yanger, conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved and family.
“We join the entire community in expressing our deep condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the departed soul to rest in peace,” the NUTA (L) stated in the message.
