Zeliangrong CSOs warns of renewed agitation

The five individuals arrested in connection with the April 7 suspected rape and murder of a 35-year-old woman in Pimla has reportedly been released on bail.

This was disclosed by the Zeliangrong Youth Organisation Nagaland (ZYON) and the Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUD) during a media briefing following a meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, on July 22.

According to ZYON President, R John Zeliang, the bail hearing took place on July 21. “All the prime accused persons are out on bail,” said Zeliang, expressing shock and disappointment over an investigation that has dragged on for more than three months. As per police, there are five prime accused, including the victim’s husband.

The ZYON and ZSUD warned of renewed agitation. The demand for swift justice has already prompted two protest movements by the Zeliangrong community in Peren district since the incident sent shockwaves across the state.

Zeliang reminded that they had earlier suspended their agitation in the hope that justice would be delivered swiftly. “We will be going back to our home district (Peren) and consult with other CSOs. This is not going to end here. We are not going to give up,” he asserted.

He questioned who would bear responsibility in the event of any untoward incidents—“The ones who bailed them out, the law enforcement agencies, or the state government?”

According to him, the state government has apparently taken advantage of the restraint displayed by the community thus far. While stating that the intent is to ensure a safe environment for women, he appealed to the broader community across the state to support their cause.
