Five dead, several injured in road accident near Tsiesema

Atleast five persons were confirmed dead on the spot and 10 more injured, some critically, after a bus met with a tragic accident at 10th Mile Road near Tsiesema on Saturday evening.

The deceased were identified as female members of the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Church.

According to Kohima Police sources, the accident occurred around 8:00 pm near the bridge, approximately five kilometres after crossing Tsiesema village.

The bus was part of a three-vehicle convoy returning from Mokokchung to Chümoukedima via Zhadima.

The passengers were members of the Chümoukedima Ao Baptist Church returning after attending an event organised by the Mokokchung Town Ao Baptist Churches Mission, held on January 30 and 31 in Mokokchung.

Sources informed that a total of 44 persons were travelling in the three vehicles; however, the exact number of passengers aboard the accident-hit bus is yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, the injured passengers were rushed to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) for treatment. The condition of some of the injured was stated to be critical.

While Preliminary reports indicated that the accident may have been caused by brake failure, though there was no official confirmation at the time of filing this report. 

Attempts to seek further details from Kohima Police and other officials remained unanswered till the filing of this report.
