Flight of Amur Falcon: ‘Longleng’ complete two cycles

In encouraging news to conservationists, particularly Lemscahenlok biodiversity project in Longleng, a satellite tagged Amur Falcon released from the area has completed two cycles of flights.  

The two migratory birds from Mongolia - ‘Longleng,’ and ‘Phom’ were released from the conservation area under Yaongyimchen village on October 29, 2016, fitted with satellite transmitters. This was the second satellite tagging of Amur Falcons from Nagaland after three Amur Falcons named Pangti, Naga and Wokha were satellite tagged in 2013 from Wokha district.  

‘Longleng’ flew to South Africa and then returned to Siberia-the Breeding place, again returned to Nagaland in 2017 and then after flying down to South Africa she once again reached Siberia, a release informed.  

She returned to Nagaland covering some 44, 000 (forty-four thousand) kilometers completing two cycle flight and once again started her third Journey to South Africa as per the latest information, informed Team Leader of Lemsachenlok, Nuklu Phom in the release.  

On November 15 last, different community initiative projects of ‘Lemsachenlok’ under Yaongyimchen Citizens were launched and commemoration programme of two-cycle completion of “Longleng” was held at the conservation area.  

According to a report, two satellite tagged Amur falcons- Tamenglong (from Manipur) and Longleng (from Nagaland) were recently tracked flying over the Arabian Sea on their way to Africa and expected to arrive in Somalia.
