Flood situation remains grim in Manipur valley

Newmai News Network Imphal | June 14   Flood situation in many parts of Manipur valley continues to be grim even as water levels in rivers passing through the valley slightly receded.   Kairang area in Imphal East district experiences the worst situation of flood with the Imphal River breaching embankments in many parts. Several houses have been inundated since last night. Locals were seen repairing the breached embankments today. About 150 households have been provided shelter at the camps.   It is also reported that about 30 feet long stretch of Imphal River was breached at Chabung Kompany, Mayang Imphal around 12.30 pm today.   Meanwhile, water levels along major rivers passing through Imphal slightly receded today. At 6:00 pm today, the water level of Imphal River at Minuthong receded to 787.725M. However, the water level of the same river at Lilong still touched the 783.000M mark by the same time.   The water level of Irilbung River at Irilbung was put at 786.900M at 6:00 pm today while the water level of Nambul River at Hump Bridge receded to 783.250M.   At the same time, four sluice gates of Ithai Barrage (No. 2, 3, 4 and 5) have been fully opened since 8:20 am today. The water level at Ithai was at the 769.180M mark.   According to records maintained by the IFC Department, the rainfall at Kangpokpi from 8:00 am yesterday (June 13) to 8:00 am today was 29.00 mm while the amount of rainfall recorded at Saikul was 15.00 mm.   At Litan, 1.00 mm of rainfall was recorded for the same period while the rainfall recorded at Raj Bhavan was 2.00 mm. At Lamphelpat, rainfall was recorded at 2.50 mm and at Jiribam, rainfall was recorded at 11.00 mm during the same duration.   Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh headed straight to Kairang moments after he arrived in Imphal from Aizawl via Guwahati this morning.   The Chief Minister and Flood Control Minister Letpao Haokip visited the flood-affected areas and took stock of the situation after a portion of the Imphal River bank was breached in the wee hours today at Kairang Muslim under Heingang assembly constituency in Imphal East district.   About 13 feet long stretch of the river bank at Kairang was also reportedly breached in the wee hours today. Some families in the area who have been displaced due to the flood are sheltered at two relief camps set up by the government. One relief camp has been set up at a Madrassa building and another at the veterinary building.
