‘Floriculture can uplift economy of villagers in Khonoma’

Kohima, November 26 (MExN): A six-day Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) programme was conducted on the topic ‘high-value floriculture’ at Khonoma village, under Kohima district from November 20 to 25. 

It was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kohima under the aegis of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, in association with State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Nagaland & National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad, a press release received here stated. 

In the keynote address, Dr Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Kohima emphasised that the programme was aimed to impart skill based training to rural unemployed youths in the field of floriculture to boost up their skills.
“Khonoma being located on a strategic area with tourist flocking throughout the year, floriculture would play a major role in uplifting the economy of the villagers,” he stated.  

The resource persons during the technical sessions were Dr Shisarenla Aier, SMS (Horticulture), Dr Martina Shitiri, ACTO (Plant Breeding & Genetics) and Keviyieno Zhasa Technical Officer (Home Science). The topics covered were High-Value Floriculture in Kohima district- scope and scenario, cultivation practices of summer and winter season flowers, principles of fresh flower arrangement, advancement in dry flower production technology, types of bouquets and bouquet making for various occasions and marketing strategy for value added floral products for higher income generation.

Hands on practical sessions were also conducted where the participants were trained on making of various styles of flower arrangements, bouquet making and dry flower product making to gear up for the upcoming Christmas Celebrations and exhibitions.  

All the 15 participants received a certificate provided under Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) scheme by Sub-Mission on Agricultural Extension (SMAE) & National Mission on Agriculture Extension & Technology (NMAET), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
