‘Floriculture a lucrative occupation for livelihood’

The Zisaji Presidency College (ZPC), Kiphire organised a seminar on ‘Floriculture as a lucrative occupation for livelihood’ with Prof P. Lal, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University as the chief guest and Prof M.K Sinha, Finance Officer, Nagaland university as the guest of honour at the College campus.  

Speaking at the programme held on March 23, the chief guest said that floriculture brings return of around 70,000 billion dollar globally but India shares less than 1%. He therefore asked the students to consider taking up floriculture as alternative livelihood option.  

The Vice Chancellor (VC) said that he has made it to visit the ZPC for the second time because he has concern for the College and asked the students and the management to give full support for the growth of the College.  

Advising the students, the VC said that Nagaland is blessed with all climatic zones and we should take advantage of these climatic conditions for the production to improve the living standard.  

Kiphire district being the only institution in the region offering higher education, the VC opined that the management and the stake holders should try to introduce science stream in the ZPC as there is only six science stream in the whole state affiliated under Nagaland University out of the 66 affiliated colleges.  

Speaking on the theme, Prof M.K Sinha, finance officer, NU said that “rural Nagaland has poverty beyond imagination and in many cases, people are surviving consuming only maize thorough out the year though the sts atistics handbook of Nagaland shows no poverty.”  

Stating Article 371 (A) and lack of organised marketing as the hindrances for outsiders to invest in Nagaland, Prof Sinha said, “in free trade if there is no industry how you will get yourself employed question the guest of honour.”  

Prof Sinha also maintained that private school teachers with all their degree cannot be considered as employment as they are underemployment because the wages they earn are very less. He also said that in country like India, government sector can offer only 1% of job and the rest in manufacturing and service sector. He asked the students to venture out to be successful.  

Earlier, Helen Jamir, Principal, ZPC welcomed the gathering while faculty and the students presented special song.  

Later, the chief guest and the guest of honour led a tree plantation at the college campus which was supplied by the Environment Forest & Ecology department.
