Dimapur | April 10

Lone Nagaland Lok Sabha MP W Wangyuh Konyak today said food grains meant for the people of Nagaland supplied through the Food Corporation of India should reach the masses. During a press meeting held today, the MP who is also Chairman of the Food Corporation of India (Nagaland) said diversion of grains by the Zonal office of the FCI should be discontinued. Presently, food grains sanctioned by the FCI first come to Dimapur, are moved back to the zonal office at Guwahati and then come back to Dimapur. Wangyuh said this practice has to be discontinued. He also said inferior quality of rice, wheat or sugar should not reach the consumers. In an earlier meeting with the FCI State Level Consultative Committee for Nagaland a resolution to forbid the diversion of food grains was passed.

Wangyuh further requested the public to report instances of receiving inferior quality rice, wheat or sugar with proof should be submitted to the administration, supply department or the FCI so that corrective measures can be made.

An FCI complex at Dimapur and a godown of the same agency at Kohima is being mooted, it was informed. The present storage capacity of the FCI at Nagaland is 29854 metric tonnes.

Another revelation that the MP made was that a search committee had been formed to scout for a new Nagaland University Vice Chancellor. Professor Miri, ex-VC of North Eastern Hill University will head the committee as Convenor while Nagaland Chief Secretary Lalhuma has been appointed as the state’s representative. Another eminent person to form part of the committee will be appointed by the Human Resources Department Ministry. The committee will invite 20 persons for the post out of which the best will be chosen for post of Nagaland University Vice Chancellor.

Wangyuh has already written to Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh to set up a fact finding committee to investigate into the Nagaland University imbroglio. Wangyuh informed that incumbent Nagaland University VC GD Sharma would be stepping down from office on June 1.

On the possible reshuffle of the Nagaland cabinet, he said such a move was based solely on the prerogative of the Chief Minister.

Explaining the nuances of the office of profit issue, the MP said Nagaland should wait till Parliament defines the term after the views of all parties are taken into account. There should be no bickering over the issue in Nagaland till Parliament passes a bill on the issue, he said.
