Dimapur | December 6
The Nagaland Foothills Road Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has withdrawn the ultimatum served to the state government.
The decision to withdraw was based on the Nagaland PWD (Roads & Bridges) assuring to fulfill the demand set by the NFHRCC.
“We have decided to withdraw the ultimatum issued on December 2 after we received positive response from the PWD,” said W Lemba Chang, General Secretary of the NFHRCC. He informed that the committee met the Chief Engineer (R&B) on December 6.
On December 2, the NFHRCC, through a press release, urged the state government to issue work order for the two-lane Foothills Road project within four days. Failing which, it warned of pulling out participants, or cultural performers, from the Hornbill Festival representing 12 tribes. The release said that the demand was in consensus with Dimapur-based tribal hohos and the Young Nagas Action Committee for Foothills Road.
According to the NFHRCC, the movement for building the long delayed Foothills Road draws legitimacy from the support and patronage of 12 tribes of the state.
The first earth-cutting work for the long aspired foothills road started in December 2013. The initial target was to have a “jeepable” or unmetalled road by the 2014-15 financial year. Eleven years on, the state government has not been able to put focus on the project, letting whatever work that was done go to waste.
