Forest dept issues public advisory after sighting of leopard in Purana Bazaar area

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 25 (MExN): Dimapur Wildlife Warden, Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change have issued a public advisory in connection to the reported sightings of a leopard recently in the fringe area of Purana Bazaar ‘B.’

According to the public advisory, the wildlife warden said available information suggests that the leopard have been possibly attracted by the livestock in the area while adding that such movement is not completely unusual but calls for greater vigilance by the general public.

At the same time, the wildlife warden has suggested some simple measures for the general public to avoid any untoward incidents.

To avoid venturing out into the nearby forest area/secluded areas or traveling alone, especially after sunset. Movement, if unavoidable, is to be in groups and with adequately bright torches.

To keep livestock secure in robust enclosures at night and any unusual disappearance of livestock is to be immediately reported to the department.

To keep the surroundings devoid of garbage, as this attracts feral dogs and other livestock, which in turn attract wild animals. The focus should be on better garbage disposal and sanitation. To keep one’s immediate surrounding areas, clear of thick grasses and bushes and residence areas well-lit at night.

It also urged the public to avoid giving heed to rumours and to avoid rumour mongering, especially on social media.

In case of sighting of the wild animal, the wildlife warden has asked the public to avoid approaching or provoking the animal and report immediately to wildlife authorities in the following contact numbers- Tokaho, Wildlife Warden, Dimapur Wildlife Division-8731821345, Hukai Zhimio, Forester 1, Dimapur Wildlife Division-8787890194.
