‘Forgiveness alone can break cycle of violence’

DIMAPUR, MAY 15 (MExN): The Chakhesang Baptist Church Council (CBCC) today said it strongly condemns the fratricidal killings among the Nagas and prays for early restoration of Peace and reconciliation among Nagas. “We believe that forgiveness alone can break the cycle of violence,” a press statement bearing the signatures of CBCC President Nüngoi Khüsoh and Executive Secretary Rev K Lüruo said.

Taking stock of the prevailing tension and violence in Phek district, the CBCC said it was obligated to put in record ‘some of the painful facts.’ The movement of heavily armed groups in full uniform during the cultivation season has deprived the villagers from going to the fields and carrying out their economic activities, the statement said.

“Factional groups have forcefully occupied a number of private houses and institutional establishments and thereby (displacing) families and disturbing the academic careers of hundreds of students.”

Noting that the unwarranted activities of the factional groups are but a complete violation of the Cease-fire ground rules, the CBCC said “all these unlawful activities continue to be unabated on the pretext of Cease-fire ground rules and thereby leaving the innocent public at the mercy of the unscrupulous armed cadres for which the so called Cease-fire became a public mockery.”

The CBCC has appealed to the State Government and all other concerned authorities to intervene and “do something immediately” to provide a sense of security and confidence to the public.

“We fervently appeal to the Government of India to implement in letter and spirit the Cease-fire ground rules which are laid out in the best interest of the public.”
