Former BJP Nagaland VP passes away; CM, Dy CM extend condolences

DIMAPUR, JULY 8 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio and Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton have expressed deep grief at the passing of R Sopu Metha (Angami), former Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland, on July 8.

Late Sopu served two terms as Kohima District President and held the post of State Vice President from 2009 to 2012 and also contested twice on the BJP ticket in the Nagaland State Assembly elections.

In a condolence message, Chief Minister Rio described Late Sopu as a distinguished public leader and committed social worker who served Naga society with sincerity and dedication in various capacities.

A recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, he was also one of the pioneers in establishing Sovima village and remained closely involved in its development, he added.  

Highlighting his contributions to the BJP in Nagaland, Rio said Sopu’s unwavering commitment to the party inspired many. 

Despite our different political paths, I have always recognised his distinguished service to the nation and his lasting contributions to India's cause,” the CM stated, also noting their close personal ties through family and long-standing friendship.

He extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of his family and prayed for strength and solace to the bereaved family and eternal peace for the departed soul.

In condolences addressed to Neilakhoü, daughter of Late Sopu, CM Rio also extended sympathies on behalf of his family and prayed for strength and solace for the bereaved family and eternal peace for the departed soul.

Meanwhile, Deputy CM Y Patton also expressed described  him as a respected senior leader who dedicated decades of his life to public service and strengthening the BJP across Nagaland.

Remembered for his grassroots connect and tireless organisational efforts, he said late Sopu earned the affection and respect of party workers and the public alike.

The Deputy CM extended condolences to his family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

In a separate condolence message, Dy CM Patton also mourned the passing of Mentsio Patton, who retired as District Inspector of Schools (DIS) under the Education Department.

Hailing from Old Riphyim, Mentsio was remembered for his commitment to public service and goodwill, he said.

Offering condolences to the bereaved family, Patton prayed that they find strength and solace in this difficult time, and for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
