DIMAPUR, APRIL 7 (MExN): Former President of the FGN, Scato Swu passed away on April 7 at 11:00am, at his residence in Satakha town. He was 90. Swu had joined the Naga National Movement on March 19, 1956 and held various posts under the Federal Government of Nagaland. He was also the Prime Minister of the Revolutionary Government of Nagaland from 1968 till its dissolution in 1973. He further held posts as Ambassador to India; Advisor to Sumi Ahng; Speaker to Tatar Hoho (Naga Parliament) and Vice President of the FGN.
Swu was nominated as a Member of Parliament to the Rajya Sabha in 1974 and re-nominated in 1980. He worked in numerous Parliamentary Committees: Home, Civil Aviation, Defense, Education, Agriculture, Railways, Shipping, SC/ST, Surface Transport, and also with the Indian Tourism Corporation. He was also appointed as Honorary Member of National Commission for Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes in 1989. Swu was also a member of the Sumi Literature Board, coauthored an Anglo-Sümi Dictionary and jointly revised the Sümi Bible translation, ‘Sülekutho’ and ‘Hails & Blames; A Brief Account of Naga Independence Struggle’ are his literary works, which have been published. He is survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters and 19 grand children. The funeral service is scheduled to be conducted at Local Ground, Satakha Town on April 9 at 1:00pm.
Nagaland Governor mourns
Nagaland State Governor, Dr. Ashwani Kumar has expressed sadness at the demise of Scato Swu. In a letter to Hukato Swu, one of Scato Swu’s sons, the Governor stated that Swu was “a proud leader of Nagaland.” “He shall always be remembered for his contribution to the welfare of the people of Nagaland. In his demise, we have lost a tall and prominent leader,” the Governor said. He further extended condolences to members of the bereaved family.
Nagaland CM condoles
Nagaland State Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio expressed grief at the demise of Scato Swu. A press note from the CM’s office stated that Swu was a “dedicated public leader, who constantly worked in the most committed manner in the interest of the people.” “In his demise, the people of Nagaland have lost a true leader,” the CM said.
