
Kohima, July 14 (DIPR): Former Governor of Nagaland, K. V. Krishna Rao still fondly reminisces about the people of Nagaland. In a letter addressed to the new Director of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, Government of Nagaland, Brig KK Roy Choudhury, SM, VSM, a copy of which was released by Raj Bhavan, Kohima, the former Governor said that he has great appreciation for the Nagas, having served with them while in the Army and as Governor. Congratulating Brig KK Roy Choudhury on his new assignment, the former Governor said that as Director he can do a lot to help the people of Nagaland. ‘While the Nagas did well as part of Assam regiment for many years, their performance in the naga Regiment which we specially raised has been remarkable. Both the serving and retired personnel certainly need due attention and care by the Nagaland Government, as well as center,’ the letter quoted.
The former Governor also conveyed his warm regards to the many political leaders, members of the administration and other people who he was sure continue to remember him. ‘My best wishes are always with the people of Nagaland,’ he said. The new Director of Sainik Welfare and Resettlement, Government of Nagaland, Brig KK Roy Choudhury, SM, VSM served as ADC to K. V. Krishna Rao when he was the Governor of Nagaland.
General (Retd) K. V. Krishna Rao (born July 16, 1923) is a former Chief of Indian Army and a former Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura. He was sworn in as Governor of Nagaland on June 13th 1984.
Among the many initiatives he had taken up while in Office as Governor of Nagaland, he had prevailed upon the Home Minister and the Prime Minister to obtain approval of the central Government for the setting up of the Nagaland University. The then prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation stone of the University at Lumami on October 5, 1987. The Governor was also instrumental in getting the north East Zone Culture center (NEZCC) established in Dimapur. Nagaland also celebrated the silver jubilee of the statehood on December 1, 1987 in the august presence of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Gen. Rao was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1942 during the 1971 war. His division captured the Sylhet area and liberated north-east Bangladesh. He retired as Chief of the Army Staff in 1983 and was appointed Governor of Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura in June 1984, leaving all of these posts by the time of his transfer to Kashmir in 1990.
